Ruth Berridge Missionary
Walker Memorial Baptist Church has a long standing history of over 120 years. It is not clear as to when this church established a missionary ministry. In 1994, under the leadership of Dr. Bush as Senior Pastor and spiritual leader of the Walker Memorial Baptist Church, the Missionary Ministry Department, which was once made up of several individual groups, was re-organized. These groups consisted of the Emma Taylor Missionary, the Senior Missionary, the Dorcus Club, the Pulpit Circle and the Sincere Workers. As a newly organized group with an important and meaningful job to be done in and around the Church community, the name was needed. It was suggested that a living member's name be chosen. At the recommendation of Dr. Bush and the ministry members, the name chosen was Ruth Berridge Missionary Ministry. Named after one of our Church Mothers, Ruth Berridge, whose name remained with the group for these many years. Mother Berridge was a faithful member of Walker Memorial Baptist Church for over seventy years and a diligent supporter of the missionaries until her demise at the ripe, full age of 101. This ministry has been the benefactor of several centenarians; Missionary Daisy Jones, who lived to be a hundred and Missionary Sarah Boyd.
Since 1994, this ministry has come together for thanksgiving to prepare, serve and deliver meals to the sick and shut-in and the needy throughout our community. Since 2006, the missionary ministry joined with the Bowery Mission, evangelizing and providing clothing for the homeless and helping to serve meals to the homeless, shut-ins and the lonely throughout the city. This ministry has evolved beyond the local communities with our Pastor at the helm. Dr. Bush's love and passion for foreign mission work has inspired us to strive for new levels of sacrifice, service and commitment to "the least of these..." our brothers and sisters locally and globally. Walker Memorial Baptist Church Mission work is global; building homes, schools, soup kitchens, relationships and Christian communities in Central and North America, the Caribbean and Africa. Walker Memorial Baptist Church has been supporting foreign mission work for over thirty years. Dr. Bush has created an unparalleled connection with God's people locally and globally through missions work around the world.
As Senior Pastor and Head Missionary of the Walker Memorial Baptist Church and Founder/CEO of So Send I You, a global mission's initiative designed to engage and involve African-American and Latino-American congregations in various aspects of missions work and activity, he has taught, inspired and uplifted thousands of people for nearly three decades. He provides educational programs about this work and manages financial appeals that support the missions. The WMBC Missionary Ministry is charged with the task of ministering to men, women, boys and girls at home and around the world.
